Kelly wanted something a little different to carry down the aisle. We spent time carefully thinking about this and she finally chose a magnificent deepest burgundy dried dahlia wrist corsage, with curling tendrils of bracken to further enhance the deep jewel coloured focal bloom. I loved designing and making this and turning a traditional floral adornment idea on its head. Something contemporary , dramatic yet still very natural was the result and she went on to frame and gift it to her mum as a special keepsake of her and Katy’s big day. We woke to the most magical hoar frost coupled with the already lying snow yesterday. A pretty rare sight in the Peak District nowadays. Today I’m determined to fit in another snowy walk before the thaw, but I’m also planning a big tidy up in my flower studio. Kept at a constant ambient temperature it seemed a kinder place to house a holidaying hen ( in a very large crate) whilst the ground temperature has been around -12 degrees overnight. I always think a little candle decoration makes a great Christmas present or a sweet gift to take with you to a friend’s house. Tiny vintage tom pots have been filled with dried moss, lichen, natural and pewter gilded berries, a gilded malus, twigs and a curly whirly bit of silver bullion wire. Not too sparkly, but definitely seasonal. The candle has been carefully secured in a discreet zinc candle holder, so the candle can easily be replaced once burnt. The foraged and garden grown dried florals are nestled in a moss and lichen lined egg shell I found lying on the floor in the pinetum at Chatsworth. Just one of the beauties of using dried flowers for wedding decor is that they can be used again, retaining their full glory 🤍. The ‘blossoming beech boughs’ I used for the wedding at the farm are now all for sale at a discounted price. They are perfect for a wedding, but the neutral shades of the flowers and foliage allow for easy placement in almost any setting. The boughs are in metre and 1.5 metre lengths and there are about 12 to 13 metres in all. They are light in weight and very easy to store and install. The ‘blossoms’ are made from dried white dahlias, white daisies, gypsophila, limonium and green/grey eucalyptus - some of my favourite dried flowers and foliage. I love Alchemilla mollis! The vivid lime green froth gently dries to a softer hue, but retains much of its colour and fluffiness. It looks fabulous in bouquets and is an excellent foliage filler in my dried flower circles. Unexpectedly it also has a strong perfume when massed together. The hedgerows are brimming with flowers and foliage at the moment, some of which I have never tried to dry before. The red campion was at seed pod stage, so I carefully snipped one or two at intervals and also harvested a few stems of pretty Hedge or Wood Woundwort ( stachys sylvatica) which is part of the mint family. It’s quite smelly, but I love its form and overall fuzziness. Two little posies are now hanging up to dry. I’ll let you know how I get on. I’m sure I’m not the only one who feels 2024 is a bumper buttercup year! All that rain managed to bring us sunshine in flower form. I like to give all my foraged flowers and grasses a good drink once home, then the hard work begins, sorting different varieties into bundles, stripping off unnecessary foliage and finding space for them to dry in the right kind of conditions. Dried flowers like darkish, dry ambient spaces, with plenty of air to swish around them. One of my favourite ways of designing with hand dried foraged and garden flowers is to create a small scale piece in a carefully chosen vintage container. This beautiful metal cup has a lovely weight to it and was a special find. Small pieces are so versatile. They can easily be popped on a shelf or placed on a desk or small table in any room, adding colour and interest throughout the year. I hope you would enjoy noticing something new each time you looked, whether it be a piece of greeny blue lichen, a twisted fern or a feathery piece of bracken. People are often surprised at how vibrant dried flowers can be. Kept in a dry spot, out of direct sunshine, they will keep their looks for a year and more. A gentle blow drives away dust or the design can be further protected by placing under a glass dome. I’ve got flower foraging withdrawal at the moment and just itching for the wild grasses, thymes and buttercups to appear and use in my designs. I was surprised and delighted to see so much reindeer moss( lichen) thriving on the heathland along the N. Norfolk shoreline this Easter weekend. I always thought it liked to grow in really cold northerly regions at high altitudes, but apparently it also likes wind and dryness. It was much admired, but I left it alone as it can take a long time to grow just a few millimetres. I was foraging for lichen in Little Shacklow Woods today and remembered February was the perfect time to spot scarlet elf cups. Within a minute or two, there they were, these gorgeous little woody orange jewels. Keep your eyes peeled, they love the moist forest floor and grow on moss covered dead wood amongst the leaves ~ 🪶

Huge wreath just finished 😅. Foraging was rather interesting this year. I had had my eye on the most splendid berried holly tree, but returned last week to find it totally stripped bare. I think there are some very chubby redwings or blackbirds out there on the Hathersage hills! Thank you friend Al @chalet_at_home for sorting my holly problem .The fir collecting went much better. Someone had been coppicing in my favourite spot, so all the top most boughs were just lying on the ground, covered in the most fabulous cones. A little Scot’s Pine and inky green conifer completed the haul. I’ve been itching to use these fabulous vintage zinc bud vases for candle decorations and decided on a seasonal palette of white, brown and a tiny touch of gold. The candles can be burned and replaced as each one sits in its own metal candle cup. They would happily add a subtle festive touch to any table and brighten a little space for many seasons to come. Dried burrs, oak galls, date palm twirls from my friend’s Jersey garden, gypsophila and hydrangea all play their own special part in the composition. Tissuing boxes and finding the pins is when I start to feel really excited that someone’s special day is about to happen. I love the consultation process as well as the making, especially when I find the magic ingredients which help to make their wedding day so memorable. Tiny spotted woodpecker feathers are tucked into these buttonholes, with the dahlia theme continuing to tie in with the primary floral pieces. The feathers I use are always those which I find myself or local friends happen across.
